Momentary Adaption

Izzy Grandic’s Lessons

I’m grateful to have experienced little-to-no harmful effects from the adaption from “normal life” to the “new normal.” I focused on the positive new experience I could learn from: more time with family, opportunities to learn skills like cooking, and having minimal distractions moving me away from my priorities.

By focusing on the opportunities created vs the situation at hand, I’ve been able to squeeze experiences and memories out of 2020.

Before shut-downs and masks, a trip materialized this learning: going to San Francisco in February. And two stories helped me develop momentary adaptation, a skill I’ve leveraged throughout the year:

  1. The unexpected concert
  2. Accidentally landing on a boat

The unexpected concert

After three weeks of travelling through Las Vegas, San Diego and Los Angeles, I landed at my final destination: San Francisco. This stop was a bit odd, though — I had no plan.

I was 16, travelling alone (but meeting my friends), with only a suitcase and $100. The world was my oyster!

After a long walk around Berkely and fabulous tacos on the first night, we found a quaint, dainty looking café. I don’t even remember why we went inside, but we did.

As I walked into the warm shop, I smelled cookies (always a good sign) and had the most beautiful music enter my years.
